How to Play
Set up: Put the cushion on a flat, stable surface and rest the bowl on it. You can also hold the bowl on a flat, open palm. Keep your fingers off the walls so they do not dampen the sound.
Strike: Hold the mallet loosely. Tap the outer wall just below the rim with a gentle, controlled stroke, then let the sound ring and fade before striking again.
Rim play: Try holding the mallet upright against the smooth outer edge of the rim. Circle slowly with steady pressure and an even pace. Keep contact along the plain upper band, away from the decorated surfaces. If the mallet rattles, slow down and keep the pressure even.
Each bowl responds a little differently. A little practice will help you find the stroke, pressure and speed that suit your bowl.
